A 30-year old woman, one Sade Odubayo, arrested for stealing a 4-year old child has revealed that she picked the child on the street and took him home because she needed a child.

The suspect was arrested and charged before the Ebute Metta Magistrates court for stealing a 4-year old child, one Moshood Awogundade, but she put up the claim that she did not steal rather that she picked the boy on the street.

The alleged theft took place at Lover Street in Ikorodu area of Lagos where the victim resides with his parents.

It was gathered that the defendant, Sade, went to the place around 5.30pm, took the boy and was taking her to an unknown place before she was accosted by the residents who saw her when she carried the boy.

She was handed over to the police in the area and she claimed that the boy was her luck because she picked him on the street. The matter was transferred to the Homicide Section at the SCIID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos for further investigations but she maintained her stand that she picked the boy as a result of her luck.
However, she was found culpable and charged before court for child theft. She pleaded not guilty insisting that she only picked him on the street for safe keeping.
The prosecutor, Inspector Chialu Nwadione, asked the court to grant her bail that will enable her to come for trial in the interest of justice.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Adedayo, granted her bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She was remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail condition.
