The police at Area D Command, Mushin led by ACP Akinbayo Olasoji has arrested three suspected smugglers and seized some bags of rice and cartons of frozen chicken believed to have been illegally imported for Christmas celebration.
The market value of the items seized could not be ascertained but said to run into million of Naira which the police was said to have handed over to the Nigerian Customs.
The suspects were arrested under the bridge at Daleko in Isolo, Lagos along with their convoy of six vehicles on their way to the market.
P.M.EXPRESS scooped that four out of the six vehicles were carrying about 220 bags of rice while the remaining two vehicles had frozen chicken and turkey parked inside.
This was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officers, SP Chike Oti during interaction with the press when he explained that the vehicles were intercepted by the team of police men led by the Area Commander, ACP Olasoji.
The suspect were apprehended while against traffic on the Daleko bridge, Mushin Isolo area of the state.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered the other suspects escaped and were said to be at large.
The suspects were unlucky as the team of policemen were on the road to ensure there was no one driving against traffic before they nabbed the smugglers and the items.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal had earlier warned all those smugglers to stop sabotaging the country’s economy and directed his officers to work and ensure that smugglers did not succeed in the state.
The police boss said he was serious about the enforcement of the laws of the land and had asked his officers to ensure compliance.
“This arrest is not for the offence of driving against traffic but for smuggling and the police will ensure that the suspects were prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to try such in future.” the police boss said.
