The Nigerian entertainment scene was thrown into a mourning mood early Wednesday as the news of the death of foremost radio music presenter with Silverbird Rhythm FM, Lagos, Michael Adedoyin, popular known as DJ Midas, broke.
DJ Midas, according to reports, died on Tuesday after a brief illness.
Silverbird Rhythm confirmed Midas’ death, with a statement released on their official website.
“We are sad to announce the passing away of a friend, former colleague and one of the baddest DJs in Nigeria, Michael Adedoyin aka DJ Midas,” the statement reads.
“DJ Midas as he is fondly called by his fans and loved ones was one of the pioneers of Disc jockeying in Nigeria. He was adored by many due to his jovial nature as well as his skills on the turntable.
“After working for many years at Silverbird’s Rhythm 93.7FM, he went on to continue his career as a DJ, still delivering top notch entertainment to his many adoring fans.
“Our prayers are with his family at this time even as they mourn his death.
DJ Midas joined the station in 1998 as a pioneer staff and regular DJ host
In his tribute on his Facebook, Alozie Mark Uzuokwu, entertainment journalist and top brass with Silverbird Rhythm said, “He is regarded as one of Nigeria’s pioneer disc jockeys, who helped in developing the profession and raising its profile in an era when the craft was poorly recognised within the country.”
He was aged 45.
