President Tinubu’s Family Leads Major Relief Mission To Flood Victims In Maiduguri

Posted on September 21, 2024

Seyi and Yinka Tinubu, children of President Bola Tinubu, alongside their in-law, Layal Tinubu, led a relief mission to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, where they distributed aid to residents displaced by severe flooding that devastated their communities.

Partnering with the Noella Foundation, private sector associates, and volunteers, the group visited affected families and offered crucial humanitarian support to help restore normalcy to their lives after the disaster.

During their visit on Friday, the President’s children also met with the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno. Their mission was reportedly inspired by President Bola Tinubu’s call for private individuals and organisations to rally around flood victims with relief materials.

In response to this appeal, Seyi and Yinka quickly mobilised resources from friends, associates, and organisations within their networks, delivering substantial amounts of food, non-food, and medical supplies to the thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the floods.

“Our goal is simple – to bring urgent relief to those who need it most,” said Seyi Tinubu, speaking on behalf of the team. “This is just the first step in a long-term commitment. We will continue to stand by the people of Maiduguri and Borno State as they recover from this tragedy.”

He added that the initiative is part of a sustained effort, with more donations and resources expected to arrive in the coming weeks, ensuring no family is left behind in the recovery process. The relief mission is also a key component of the Noella Foundation’s broader commitment to strengthening communities in times of crisis.

The relief package included a diverse range of food items: 1,000 cartons each of spaghetti, tomato paste, and groundnut oil, alongside 500 bags of rice and 200 bags of maize flour. In addition, 10,000 loaves of bread were provided to address basic food needs. Seasoning, including 200 cartons of Maggi, 1,000 bags of salt, and 100 cartons of sugar, were also donated to enhance the nutritional value of meals.

Beyond food, essential non-food items were distributed to ensure that displaced families could maintain their dignity and improve living conditions. These included 5,000 mosquito nets, 1,000 mattresses, 4,000 blankets, and 4,000 wash kits and buckets for personal hygiene. The relief team also provided 4,000 kettles, 4,000 wrappers, and 10,000 mats, ensuring families have basic household provisions.

The medical aid was equally comprehensive, with a wide range of medications and supplies targeting the immediate health concerns of the displaced population. This included 26,000 packs of antimalarial drugs, 3,500 boxes of analgesics, 3,000 boxes of anti-ulcer medications, and 35,000 packs of antihypertensive drugs. Additional medical items included 50 cartons of antidiabetic medication, 110 cartons of antidiarrheal drugs, and 9,650 boxes of antibiotics and antifungal treatments. To further bolster healthcare efforts, 3,500 cartons of antiparasitic drugs, 1,500 cartons of medical infusions, and 4,500 boxes of medical consumables were donated.

Additionally, 50 doctors from the network of associates were mobilised and are currently working with the Borno State Ministry of Health to provide on-ground medical assistance over the coming days.

Governor Zulum expressed his deep appreciation for the swift and substantial response and pledged that the donated resources would be distributed efficiently to meet the needs of the affected communities.
