Senator Ekwunife Reacts As Senate Votes To Allow For Electronic Transmission Of Electoral Results

Posted on October 13, 2021

The lawmaker representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife, PhD, has reacted to the vote by the Nigerian Senate to allow for electronic transmission of election results.

Ekwunife said, “Today, the Nigerian Senate voted to allow for electronic transmission of election results, a feat I consider a critical milestone in our nation’s history”.

“The Senate made the decision after a thorough debate by some of us who believed in the electronic transmission process. The current decision of the senate which was at variance with its earlier decision which subjected the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to seek approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission before it could transmit elections results electronically, allows for an unconditional electronic transmission of results.”

“During the debate, I maintained my earlier stand that Nigeria is due for electronic transmission of results. I feel strongly that instant electronic transmission of election results will address many of the challenges in our electoral process and end the alteration of results and electoral fraud during collation which is usually occasioned by human error or deliberate attempt to upturn the wishes of the people.”

“I am therefore, pleased that my colleagues saw the need to make a U-turn and vote for an unconditional transmission of results. I equally thank the leadership of the Senate led by Senator Ahmad Lawan CON, PhD, for bringing this critical issue back to be debated in plenary.”

“My commitment to the development of our democratic process remains unwavering. An improved and credible electoral process is the bedrock of any progressive society. This latest decision of the Senate will enthrone a new order in our electoral system and guarantee that the votes of the electorates are protected.”
