Residents of Shasha community in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State have expressed cautious optimism as the Lagos State Government commenced rehabilitation work on the dilapidated Shasha Road.
The repair work, which began on Thursday, comes after months of complaints by motorists, commuters, and business owners over the deplorable state of the road, and following a recent report by PUNCH Metro highlighting the hardship faced by users of the road.
P.M.EXPRESS observed that workers of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (PWC) have been mobilized to the Jimoh end of Shasha Road, where they were seen filling potholes and grading sections of the road.
The intervention has brought relief to many residents who say the bad road had made daily movement difficult and increased transportation costs.
Mr. Kolapo Raheem, a resident of Shasha who spoke with P.M.EXPRESS on Friday, said the rehabilitation work actually started on Saturday last week but became more visible on Thursday.
“We are happy that work has finally started on the road. We have been complaining about its condition for months, and it is encouraging to see the government taking action. We hope they will do a good job and complete it on time,” Raheem said.
Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, described the commencement of work as a welcome development.
“We are relieved to see the workers on the road because the potholes have been a serious problem for us. Sometimes, motorists struggle to pass through, and this causes traffic. We hope the government will not abandon the project halfway,” he said.
Commercial drivers who ply the Egbeda-Shasha-Akowonjo route also welcomed the development but urged the government to do a thorough job.
Mr. Tunde Olatunji, a danfo driver, TOLD P.M.EXPRESS that he spends more money on vehicle repairs due to the bad road.
“Every week I go to mechanic because of Shasha Road. My shock absorber, my tyre, everything spoils. If they repair well, it will help us. But they should not just pour sand and leave,” he said.
Mrs. Bose Adeyemi, a trader near Jimoh Bus Stop, said the bad road had affected sales as customers avoid the area during rainy season.
“When it rains, this place becomes a river. No customer will come. We are begging Sanwo-Olu to help us do permanent repair, not patch patch,” she said.
Shasha Road is a critical link road connecting Egbeda, Akowonjo, and Shasha communities to the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. It serves thousands of residents daily, including students, workers, and traders who commute to Iyana Ipaja, Egbeda, and Ikeja.
The road had become almost impassable at some sections, particularly around Jimoh Bus Stop and Orisumbare area, where large potholes and failed sections forced motorists to drive against traffic, causing gridlock and accidents.
Checks by P.M.EXPRESS show that the Lagos State Government has recently intensified road repairs across Alimosho following public outcry over the state of inner roads. The Public Works Corporation has been deployed to several locations, including parts of Egbeda and Ikotun.
The Lagos State Government has not issued an official statement specifically on Shasha Road, but sources at the Ministry of Works said the rehabilitation is part of the ongoing palliative road repair programme ordered by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ease movement during the rainy season.
The programme targets roads that have been badly affected by rainfall and heavy traffic.
Residents have however, urged the government to go beyond palliative and carry out full reconstruction with proper drainage to prevent future collapse.
They noted that Alimosho, being the largest local government area in Lagos State by population, needs more attention in terms of road infrastructure.
P.M.EXPRESS will continue to monitor the progress of work on Shasha Road and other roads in Mosan-Okunola LCDA and Alimosho Local Government.
Residents are encouraged to remain patient and cooperate with construction workers while the repairs last.
As at the time of filing this report, work is still ongoing at the Jimoh end of the road, with some sections already graded.
P.M.EXPRESS will bring updates as events unfold.
