The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nasarawa State, Lucky Isaac Yargwa has declared that Team Nasarawa are battled ready to surpass the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival record in the ongoing 21st edition of the festival in Asaba, Delta State.

In the last festival in Edo State, Nasarawa won 22 medals comprised 5 gold, 4 silver and 13 bronze medals. The state was placed in the 18th position out of the 36th states and the FCT that participated in the festival.

The Delta 2022 will be a different ball game, the sports commissioner told the media while speaking on Saturday.

“We came fourth among the states in the northern region of the country in the last festival in Edo State, but this time, we are well fortified to surpass this record. We are targeting to end this Delta 2022 among the Top 10 on the medal table. This is a tall ambition which we have prepared ourselves to meet.

“The state governor has motivated us to do well in Asaba. We have a strong contingent comprises 109 athletes, 33 coaches, 8 referees, 27 sports officers, 20 officials, 2 medical staff and 6 security personnel.

“Team Nasarawa will compete in 27 events in which we are more confidence that will take us to that level we are targeting.

“Our athletes are currently in the medal zones of most of the events they are competing in as the Delta 2022 is going on.

“The governor, Engineer Abdullahi A. Sule, is our great supporter. He had fulfilled the cash promised the medalists from Edo Sports Festival to the tune of N16.5m pledged to them. This will go a long way to motivate them to do the state proud this time knowing fully well that handsome rewards await them at the end of the day,” Commissioner Yargwa said in the company of the Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Sports in Nasarawa, Eche Amos.
