Nigeria’s Olympic legend, Funke Oshonaike, has revealed why she left her marriage.

She attributed it to rape, battery and dishonesty on the part of her ex-husband.

She stated that her former husband was always in the habit of beating her, after which he would jump on her to have sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

The 48-year old ping-pong player said she did all to protect the union but her ex-husband was not helping issues as the rape and beating persisted.

According to Oshonaike, who has been representing Nigeria since age 14, “The beating was becoming too much, aside that, I was being raped by him. I did all I could, fasted and prayed but the needed change didn’t come. I even tried to file for divorce, but families and friends prevailed on me not to do so”.

Speaking from her base, Hamburg, Germany, where she is currently studying to become a Nurse, the multiple Olympian added that despite all her sacrifices her ex-husband still continued.

Speaking on the straw that eventually broke the camel’s back, Oshonaike said: “I left Germany for Lagos for a table-tennis event and I pleaded with him to help take care of our two sons and bid him bye. I was playing a game, when it was time for break, a friend walked up to me and showed me a picture of my husband getting married to another woman in Lagos. I was rattled, my BP rose to 200. I couldn’t finish the game as I was rushed to the hospital”.

Would she remarry? She said yes, but to a loving and caring man unlike the previous one.
