NJOKU MACDONALD OBINNA
There is no doubt that accessible and motorable roads remains part of the key indices in measuring the performance index or parameter of any Government in Nigeria; given the nexus between quality roads and accelerated economic development.
After 150 years, the ancient kingdom of Opobo, an island in Rivers State, can now be comfortably accessed by road, following the inauguration of Opobo axis of the Unity Road by the Executive Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON.
With paucity of funds and dwindling figures in monthly allocations to the various State Governments from the federation account, it has drastically reduced the pace at which capital project; infrastructure, is implemented in most states as the state governors struggle to pay workers’ salaries; only a few of them are embarking on road constructions in practical terms. Among the few, the Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, stands tall as one who is conspicuously doing standard road projects across the Local Government Areas in his state.
The writer, a Media Consultant, vividly captured this during the official commissioning of Opobo/Nkoro Unity Road solidly built by Gov Nyesom Ezenwo Wike,CON.
The 11.15 kilometres long and 7.3m wide road, with five bridges along the Opobo axis of the super highway, has a minimum fill height of two meters, with a maximum height of 8 meters at some points, was commissioned by a member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees (BOT) and former Minister, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri.
