The MD/CEO of Ruzu Herbal Products and Services Ltd., Dr. Onyemaechi Roberts Uzu, will be educating the public on a range of health issues and offering suggestions for managing and preventing ailments as part of the series on comprehensive wellness.

This health awareness exercise is meant to span across the world to enable strategic measures in managing diverse ailments with simple remedies for good health and vitality. Today, June 30th, 2025,

Dr. Uzu unveils the traditional approach for the final solution on ‘Hypertension’ in Module 5 of today’s health tips, which have proven to be helpful, saying,

“Blood pressure is a measure of the force that the blood applies to the walls of the arteries as it flows through them; this blood pressure is an essential and normal part of the way the body works. The large arteries that leave our hearts taper into smaller arteries called arterioles; the arterioles then taper into smaller vessels called capillaries, which supply oxygen and nutrients to all the organs of the body.”

“Certain nerve impulses cause the arteries to become larger or become smaller easily. If they are narrow, it is harder for blood to flow through them, and the pressure inside then increases, and by extension, high blood pressure develops.”

“High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. The heart must pump blood that is moving under great pressure, and if it continues in this way, then problems might occur in the heart and arteries.

Blood pressure is measured with a monitor called a sphygmomanometer, a digital box attached to a tube with a cuff at the end. The cuff is placed around the upper arm and inflated to a certain level, then deflated slowly. A sensor in a cuff provides information about the blood pressure.”

The result is expressed as two numbers, such as 120/80 mm Hg.

The top number (systolic reading) represents the number when the heart beats, pumping blood in the arteries (highest pressure), and the bottom number (diastolic reading) represents when the heart is at rest and blood pressure drops to its lowest point.

Hypertension is another word used to describe a condition when the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries is too high.

There are two types of hypertension known as primary or essential hypertension and secondary hypertension. Most hypertensive patients have primary hypertension, which means there is no single clear cause of it. Secondary hypertension could be a result of other health issues, including pregnancy. Kidney disease, endocrine disease, contraceptive pills, etc.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, eye disease, heart failure, etc.

If you experience frequent fatigue, excessive sweating, palpitations, headaches, blurred vision, strong heartbeats, etc., you must immediately go to the hospital for a medical checkup. Unfortunately, most people with hypertension don’t have any symptoms. They are diagnosed when they have their blood pressure taken as part of a medical examination. That is one good reason to have a regular checkup, especially if you are above 40 years old.

You might consider getting a blood pressure monitor to use yourself at home. It is important to take readings on different days. Early morning is the best time to take readings.

It is of great importance that you monitor your lifestyle. Quit smoking, alcohol consumption, and foods high in cholesterol and salt. Regulate your sleeping habits and reduce your stress; sleep at least 8 hours at night.
