TotalEnergies, AMNI Take $800m FID On Ima Gas Field After Over 50 Years Idleness

TotalEnergies and its Nigerian partner AMNI International Petroleum Development Company Limited have taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) of about $800 million to develop the offshore Ima gas field in Nigeria, which will supply the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) liquefaction plant, the French oil major said on Wednesday.
The field is expected to begin production in 2028 and reach plateau output of 350 million cubic feet of gas per day (mcf/d), equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d).
TotalEnergies said gas from Ima, located on OML 112 and OML 117 near Bonny Island in Rivers State, would be transported by pipeline to Nigeria LNG and provide about one-third of the gas needed for the Train 7 expansion project.
The expansion is expected to raise NLNG’s liquefaction capacity to 30 million metric tons per year (mtpa) from 22 million tons currently.
The company said the project marks a further step in its integrated gas strategy in Nigeria by adding low-cost gas resources to its portfolio.
The gas field was discovered in 1973 but remained undeveloped for over 50 years, making the FID a significant milestone for Nigeria’s gas development ambitions.
The development of Ima is expected to boost domestic gas supply, support Nigeria’s energy transition agenda, and strengthen NLNG’s feedgas security ahead of Train 7 coming fully on stream.
The project is also seen as a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s improved fiscal terms under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and recent executive orders aimed at attracting deepwater and gas investments.
AMNI International is a privately held Nigerian independent oil & gas E&P company, founded in 1993 and headquartered in Lagos.
Its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer is Chief Tunde J. Afolabi, MFR.
The firm is one of the longer-running indigenous offshore operators in West Africa.
AMNI presently operates OML 112 — Okoro and Setu. It is 100% operator.
Okoro is the core producing oil field (historically cited around ~22,000 bopd). A 3-well campaign started around March 2026 aimed at lifting peak output above ~12,000 bpd/adding ~10–14k bopd depending on the source.
AMNI also has 40% equity in OML 52 — Tubu field with NNPC 60%.
It’s a Shallow water; development targeted from Q4 2026. Company has talked about 80 million barrels of reserves and potential 30,000 bopd.
Ima field (straddles OML 112 and 117) — historic oil production plus a large undeveloped gas resource. AMNI holds 60% and TotalEnergies 40%.
In Ghana, AMNI operates Central Tano deepwater block (~90% Amni).
They also cite roughly 3.5 Tcf of gas reserves and a multi-year development pipeline they have put at $2.5bn, with a peak production ambition above 150,000 boe/d if projects land.
On 23 September 2026, TotalEnergies and AMNI took FID on the $800m Ima Gas Field.
Peak: 350 mmscf/d (~50–60k boe/d). First gas targeted 2028. Gas is meant to feed NLNG Train 7 and cover about one-third of that expansion’s feedstock.
