UCH Blackout: Students Commend Power Minister For Restoring Electricity

Posted on February 24, 2025

Students of the University of Ibadan have commended the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, for his intervention that led to the restoration of electricity supply to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

In a letter of appreciation to the Minister by the Student Union, signed by its President, Aweda Bolaji and General Secretary, Ogundijo Dolapo Japheth, the students said his prompt response has demonstrated the Minister’s commitment to keeping his word, which they were grateful for.

“On behalf of the students of the University of Ibadan, we write to express our sincere appreciation for your swift intervention in addressing the electricity blackout at the University College Hospital (UCH).

“As you promised, electricity was restored to UCH within 48 hours, and on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Power was also reinstated in our Hall of Residence: Alexander Brown Hall and Ayodele Falase Hall. Your prompt response has demonstrated your commitment to keeping your words, and for this, we are truly grateful.

“We commend your dedication to improving the nation’s power sector and appreciate your continued support for students”, the letter reads.

The students also requested the Minister to assist in lighting some parts of the campus. “…as members of your constituency, we wish to bring to your attention another pressing issue affecting our campus -the inadequate lighting in key areas, which has contributed to security concerns.

“In light of this, we humbly request your support in the donation of 150 solar-powered streetlights to illuminate Barth Road (the longest road on campus), Tech Road, and other frequently travelled pathways used by students for classes and night reading. This initiative will significantly enhance security and ensure a safer environment for all. Additionally, we seek your assistance in procuring a 10 kva solar system for the Students’ Union Building. This will enable us to transition off-grid, reducing our dependence on national power supply and mitigating the effects of erratic electricity”.
