A 40-year old Wema Bank staff, Akinyele Ogunpola, has been arrested for allegedly swindling the bank to the tune of N70m during transactions.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened in October 2021 at Wema Bank located at Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
When he was fingered in the alleged offence, he was sacked before he was handed over to the Police for prosecution.
Having been found culpable, he was subsequently charged before the Chief Magistrates Court sitting in Abeokuta for conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings, told the Court that the defendant committed the alleged offence with one other at large by conspiring to steal the money belonging to Wema Bank.
She explained that the defendant was an employee of the bank working in the Marketing Department, where loan is being disbursed to customers who applied.
The prosecutor stated that when customers apply for loans, the defendants would include additional money to the loan and defraud the bank, an offence, she said, contravened Sections 516 ,383(1) and 390(9)of the Criminal Code Vol.1 Law of Ogun 2006.
However,  the defendant pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. I.O. Abudu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety each in like sum, who must be a relative or a civil servant and must show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun State Government.
The defendant was remanded in custody pending when he will perfect his bail conditions while the matter was adjourned till 5th December, 2022, for hearing.
