Westerlo Survives Fackson Tofido To Win Oshorun Cup In Lagos

Westerlo Football Academy Monday came out victorious after defeating Fackson Tofido Football Club 11-10 on penalty shootout following barren draw at the regulation time in the final of Oshorun Saheed Paseda football competition.

The pulsating encounter held yesterday afternoon at the Rehabilitation sports center, Isheri-Oke, Ojodu Berger,Lagos.

It was a final watched by cup donor , High Chief Saheed Paseda Oshorun,some invited guests and hundreds of spectators.

The encounter lived up to expectations as both finalists gave account of themselves.Several chances were created but poor finishing denied both teams from scoring at the regulation time.

During the penalty shootout, Westerlo keeper Paul Adeyemi became an hero as he saved a penalty kick which earned his team to win the high tension soaked match.

Reacting to the victory,Westerlo coach, Tunde Akande congratulated his boys for the job well done. He admitted that both teams played better but noted that his boys were more determined and composed on penalty shootout than their opponents.

“It was a hard fought Victory and I must congratulate my players for their good performance.I thank our club chairman, Dosu Joseph (MON) for his support given to the team throughout the competition.

“I cannot also forget our fans who supported the club throughout our campaign and we promise to do better in the New Year,”he said.

Fackson Tofido coach, Farouk Yusuf expressed disappointment over his team’s defeat saying that their opponents were lucky to have ran away with the victory in the penalty shootout.

“It was unfortunate that we lost the game through the penalties, we came to win but unfortunately we lost through penalties.My boys gave their best and our opponents were not better than us,”he said.

The cup donor, Chief Oshorun thanked God for the success of the competition and also commended both teams for their gallant display throughout the encounter.

He also reveled that sponsoring the tourney born out of  passion he has for the round leather game.

“It was a great final and highly entertaining.Both teams played good football but the best team finally won the game.

“This competition was sponsored for the love I have for the game and I must confess that the tourney had brought out hidden talents in the community.

“Having said this,the competition has also brought unity, friendliness and love among the youths in the community and its environs,” he said.

During the presentation, Westerlo received the sum of N250,000 with a giant trophy while Fackson Tofido pocketed N100,000.Some outstanding players also awarded cash prize for their effort in the tournament.
