Who Killed Asahel?

Posted on January 30, 2021

The greatest misfortune in human race is for a man not to know where he is going, yet he’s racing on top speed to get there. Many people have set sail on a voyage that leads only to nullity. James Thurber once admonished that: “All men should try to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why.”

Asahel was the brother of Joab, the GOC of David’s Army. They were valiant men of war but not one of them was a match to Abner, an intelligent, experienced, highly notable and respected tactical combatant, the GOC of the army of Saul.

Abner had told Joab, “Let’s have the young soldiers get up and have a contest here.” Joab blindly gave his consent without thinking of the ramification. Unfortunately, a contest that started as sheer fun ended in disaster. Both sides got more than they bargained for. The field was littered with casualties. Abner and his boy took to their heels, and Judah boys waylaid them.

Asahel was described as the fasted man in the country. His feet was said to be as swift as cheetah. He chose to chase the Bigwig, Abner. Looking back, Abner asked, “Is that you, Asahel?” Asahel said, “Yes, it’s me.” Abner didn’t want to hurt Asahel, “Stop chasing me—go after one of the young soldiers.” But Asahel was defiant. So Abner used the back end of his spear and pushed it deep into Asahel’s stomach and came out of his back. Asahel died.

Despite all the handwritings on the wall, warning against further pursuit of fruitless ventures, many people have vowed never to desist until they see the end of it, even with the last drop of their blood. This is my take and you have the right not to take it. There is nothing in this life that’s worth a drop of your blood. Your own Abner may be drug addiction, promiscuity, adultery, banditry, or Execu-thief robbery. Stop chasing what can kill you someday!
