Woman, 43, Batters 3-Year Old Grandchild Over Suspicion Of Witchcraft

A 43-year old woman, Taiwo Akinosho, has been arraigned before the Ogba Magistrate Court in Lagos for allegedly battering her three-year-old grandchild over witchcraft suspicion. 
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened in April, 2026, in Ipaja area of Lagos, where they reside.
She was charged for the alleged child battery under the Criminal Law of the State.
She pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Philip Adegoke Ademigbuji, told the court that the alleged offence took place at the defendant’s residence, where the minor lives with her grandmother.
The Court heard that the child was accused of being a witch. Ademigbuji alleged that following the accusation, the minor was starved for several days and subjected to repeated beatings by the defendant.
He further alleged that the assault left the child with multiple scars and bruises across her body.
The prosecutor informed the court that the victim is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.
The prosecution stated that the alleged conduct contravened Section 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which addresses offences relating to child battery and unlawful assault.
The Chief Magistrate, Omolara Kushanu, listened to the submissions from both parties and granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Court directed that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must provide verifiable addresses.
The matter was adjourned until 27th May, 2026, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when she will perfect her bail conditions.
