A businessman, Malam Baballe Ibrahim, has incurred a heavy loss after spending huge sums of money to perform the marriage rites of his wife, Hauwa’u and one year after, the wife dumped him.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, has dissolved the marriage between the businessman, Malam Baballe Ibrahim and his wife, Hauwa’u, and the Court ordered the wife to refund him only N120,000 despite the huge sum of money he spent on her.
The embattled husband protested before the Court that since the wife no longer wanted the marriage, she should refund all the money he spent on her before and after the marriage before she filed for divorce.
However, the Court presided over by Malam Kabir Muhammad declined the request but granted the divorce through khul’i (redemption), which allows a woman to end her marriage by refunding the dowry paid by her husband.
To that effect,  the Court ordered Hauwa’u  to return ₦100,000 dowry and an additional ₦20,000 described as Kudin Gaisuwa — money traditionally given to her parents during the introduction ceremony.
The Court also directed Ibrahim to allow his estranged wife to retrieve her belongings from his house and allow peace to reign for the parties go their separate ways.
But Ibrahim has resisted the divorce, insisting that his ex-wife must reimburse not only the dowry but also all he spent on her from the time they began courting until their separation.
He claimed to have spent heavily on her upkeep, including money for skincare, clothing, makeup, and other personal needs.
Despite his demands, the judge clarified that only the dowry and Kudin Gaisuwa were refundable under khul’i. The marriage was officially dissolved, paving the way for Hauwa’u to leave the union legally and independently.
The case underscores the growing number of disputes in Shari’a courts, where disagreements over divorce settlements and financial responsibilities often become contentious issue in the society.
