In a longstanding tradition of generosity and compassion, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, founder of Pro-Value Humanity and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, celebrated Christmas with over ten thousand women cut across Anambra State on 23rd December, 2024.
The event, which has been a hallmark of his philanthropic endeavours for over 13 years, saw the distribution of rice, cash, clothing, and other items to beneficiaries from various communities and local government areas in Anambra, as well as non-indegene residents of the state.
Addressing attendees, Prof. Okonkwo also took a moment to mourn the tragic incidents that occurred in Okija, Anambra State, the Federal Capital Territory, and other parts of the country, where several lives were lost in stampedes during Christmas empowerment events. He observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims and offered prayers for their eternal rest, urging greater caution both on the part of organisers and beneficiaries.
“Prof. Okonkwo further emphasised the importance of sharing the blessings of the season with those in need.
“Christmas is a time of love, unity, and giving. It’s a time to reflect on the blessings we’ve received and extend them to others, especially women who play vital roles in their various families and our society at large,” he said.
The beneficiaries, many of whom expressed gratitude for the gesture, highlighted the impact of Prof. Okonkwo’s annual celebration. “This is more than a gift; it’s hope and joy for our families during this festive season,” said one of the recipients.
Held in the spirit of unity and goodwill, the event has turned December 23 into a day eagerly anticipated by women across Anambra and beyond. Prof. Okonkwo reiterated his belief in the power of kindness and community, stating, “Sharing the gifts and blessings of the Almighty is a responsibility we all should embrace, not based on the size of our pocket but on the depth of our compassion. He passionately encouraged everyone to give something back, however small it may seem. Whether it’s a smile, an act of love, or a simple kindness, it can truly make a difference in someone else’s life.
The event not only brought smiles to the faces of the beneficiaries but also served as a poignant reminder of the true spirit of Christmas—giving, compassion, and reflection.
