CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
A jealous husband, Mr. Michael Essien, has inflicted injury on his wife, Mariam, by pouring hot water on her for talking with one of their neighbours in Lagos.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at 62, Ibeloro Street in Ishaga area of Isolo, Lagos, where they reside.
The 42-year year old Essien claimed that the victim disobeyed his directive that she should not discuss with any of the tenants in their compound for undisclosed reasons. He was said to have got married to the victim some years back and they had two children but warned her to stay alone which was difficult for her.
On the day the incident happened, Mariam was said to have boiled water in order to prepare semovita when the husband came back from work and met her in the kitchen discussing with one of the tenants.
The husband reportedly entered the kitchen, carried the pot containing the hot water, emptied it on his wife’s body and she sustained severe burns almost all the parts of her body.
She was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where she was admitted and currently receiving treatment.
The matter was reported to the police at Isolo Division and Essien was arrested. The police found him culpable and he was charged before Isolo Magistrates Court for assault on the victim.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Mr. Oje Uagbale, informed the Court that the victim was still at the Intensive Unit of the General Hospital where the doctors were battling to save her life.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Teluwo, granted Essien bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
However, it appeared that he will stay longer in prison over the incident because none of his relations and neighbours were willing to stand as surety for him.
The neighbours described what he did to his wife as crude and wicked and was said to have subjected the victim to mental torture in the past before the incident took place.
The matter was adjourned till 17th April, 2019, for hearing while the victim was still at the hospital pending whether she will survive the attack.
