$185,000, N3m Prizes At Stake At 2017 Lagos City Marathon

After the countdown flagged off by Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday night, organisers of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has begun to release details of how the second edition of the championship will be packaged.
The 2017 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is scheduled to take place on 11 February and this event will be staged as part of activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Lagos State.
As contain in the Media Guide made available to P.M.EXPRESS, the prize monies have been categorised into Dollars and Naira based with the prizes for the foreign marathoners domiciling in dollars while their Nigerian counterparts will win their prizes in Naira.
A total sum of $185,000 is expected to be won by the first 10 athletes among the visiting athletes with the winner taking home a whopping sum of $50,000. Second, third, fourth and fifth placed winners will get $40,000, $30,000, $20,000 and $15,000 respectively.
Sixth placed finisher will win $10,000, while winner in the seventh position will take home $8,000. The eighth, ninth and tenth placed winners go home with $6,000, $4,000 and $2,000 respectively.
The total prize money in the Nigerian category is N3,035,000 with the first position winning N1 million, second position takes home N750,000, while third position will get N500,000.
Winners in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh positions with go home with the sum of N300,000, N200,000, N100,000, N75,000 respectively. Winners in the eighth position will pocket N50,000, while winners in the ninth and tenth positions will take home 40,000 and N20,000 respectively.
The marathon race of 42.195km will start by 7am at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos with expected participants of 50,000 athletes along whom are 60 international elites and 200 Nigerian elites.
The organisers said they are expecting 15 Gold Label athletes, 20 Silver Libel athletes and 35 Bronze Label athletes across the world.
While the race will terminate at the Eko Atlantic in Victoria Island, 250 national officers and about 1,000 volunteers will be on ground to execute a world class event which is sponsored by Access Bank with the likes of 7Up Bottling Company, Eko Hotels & Suites and Eko Atlantic as partners.
Sir Omolade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere has been designated to be Running Number Collection Point from 30 January to 9 February, 2017 between 9am and 6pm each day.
“We will consolidate on the success and our experience in the first edition to organise this second edition, ” the Governor of Lagos State, who has equally volunteered to be the Chief Logistics Officer for the competition said at a flagged off press conference for the championship held recently.
“We are using this event to drive tourism and we have determined to make it permanent by ensuring it is one of the annual competitions of International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF). There is no doubt that Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will be the best in Africa, ” the sports loving Governor said.
“What we took home in the wake of first edition on 6 February, 2016 was that the competition has indeed encourage the culture of running among the good people of Lagos State,” he said.
