BOA Lawyers League Football Tournament Returns, Kicks Off 5 May In Lagos

In keeping with the tradition of commemorating the late Bankole Olumide Aluko (SAN), one of the founding partners at Aluko & Oyebode Law Firm, who passed away some years ago, the BOA Lawyers League Football Tournament is back with great fanfare.

The football tournament will host fans with the kickoff on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the Lagos Preparatory School in Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

BOA Lawyers League is a football tournament featuring the best law firms in Lagos city to bring lawyers together in a friendly and competitive atmosphere. The competition is being held for the 19th time this year after it was suspended in the 3rd week of the 2020 edition due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Nigeria.

Despite the absence of winners of 17th edition, Falana and Falana in this year’s competition, 15 teams from law firms in Lagos are preparing for the opening day with great excitement and high expectations following the draw ceremony held in Lagos on Friday 26 April 2024, with the hope of winning the coveted trophy and crown the champions.

According to ALN Nigeria/Aluko & Oyebode partner and former chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Chapter, Chukwuka Ikwuazon (SAN), the 19th edition of BOA Lawyers League promises to be exciting and entertaining as the organizers will not miss it unforgettable in honour of the highly respected late Bankole Olumide Aluko (SAN).

Ikwuazon (SAN), who was represented by Emma Ndiyo, a senior associate at Aluko & Oyebode, at the draw ceremony, said he was proud to see colleagues from other law firms coming together to compete after the pause due to COVID-19 in 2020.

“We look forward to having fun this year. This is a twelve-week season which will kick off on Sunday 5th May at Lagos Preparatory School. It will be interesting competition,” Ikwuazon (SAN) said.

During the draw ceremony, the 15 registered participating teams were grouped into Pot A (Harmattan) and Pot B (Rain). At the end of the transparent draw witnessed by the representatives of the law firms, Temsplars, ALP, UUBO, Grey Bloom, Wole Olanipekun, Dentos-Acas, DOA and Gelias were grouped in Pot A, while the likes of OALP, Minerva, Aluko & Oyebode, Strea & Blan, Punuka B & I and Pinheiro were in Pot B.

The championship will be played in round robin basis in the group stage and the best four teams from each group will play in the quarterfinals. On the final day, two matches will be decided: the third place and the final matches.

The Championship is played according to strict rules of football, with the aim of achieving best practices set by FIFA, the governing body of world football.
