Hon. Oluwaseyi Ayopo Sowunmi has expressed support for girl-child education through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) following the hosting of Project Ojo Girls in STEM in Ojo Federal Constituency, Lagos State.
The programme, which focused on encouraging female students to explore opportunities in science and technology, was held at the NDC Secretariat in Ojo Constituency. The event brought together students from secondary schools, educators, women leaders and political stakeholders.
Project Ojo Girls in STEM is an initiative designed to promote interest in STEM subjects among young girls and to provide guidance on career paths in technology, engineering and related fields. The project was coordinated by Amina Lawal, who serves as Project Coordinator, in collaboration with education stakeholders in the constituency.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Sowunmi encouraged students to remain committed to their education and to develop confidence in their academic abilities. He noted that education remains a critical tool for preparing young people for future opportunities and for contributing to community development.
According to him, investing in the education of girls is important for inclusive development. He stated that when girls are given access to quality education and skills, they are better positioned to pursue their ambitions and participate actively in society.
He also pledged to continue supporting programmes that focus on education, skills development and youth empowerment in Ojo Federal Constituency. He added that sustained support for educational initiatives would benefit not only the students but the wider community.
The event was attended by several stakeholders, including Alhaja Taiwo Jaiyeola, NDC Women Leader, and women leaders from different wards within Ojo Federal Constituency. Also present was Hon. Adeosun Adisa Moses, an aspirant for the Ojo Constituency I seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Participants at the programme discussed the importance of creating more learning opportunities for female students and ensuring that girls are not limited by stereotypes in choosing academic and career paths.
In her remarks, Mrs. Abdulsalam thanked Hon. Sowunmi for supporting the initiative, describing education as a lifelong asset for the girl-child. She said programmes that expose students to science and technology can help shape their future decisions.
Similarly, Mrs. Udemba of Isashi Junior Grammar School commended the initiative and expressed appreciation for efforts aimed at inspiring female students. She noted that such programmes encourage students to broaden their knowledge and consider diverse academic options.
Mrs. Helen Irabor-Esezobor, FCA, in a goodwill message, highlighted the need for collaboration among schools, community leaders and other stakeholders to support the education of young girls. She emphasised that sustained investment in education is necessary to help girls achieve their full potential.
Organisers said Project Ojo Girls in STEM was created to encourage young girls to develop curiosity in science and technology and to understand the role of innovation in economic development. The programme also aimed to demonstrate the value of partnership between educators and community stakeholders in promoting learning at the grassroots level.
Stakeholders at the event called for continued focus on girl-child education and for more programmes that provide mentorship, practical learning and access to information about STEM careers.
The programme concluded with a call for ongoing investment in education as a means of empowering girls and contributing to the development of Ojo Constituency and Lagos State.
