The bid for who becomes the next President General of Umuchu town in Aguata Local Government of Anambra State is gaining momentum as four candidates are jostling to take over from the current president, Ozo Charles Ezenwabasili and his executives as they are set to bow out in August, 2025.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that so far four candidates have indicated interest to vie for the position of President General from the Okpu na Achalla block in the town slated to present the next President due to rotation of power in line with the Constitution of Umuchu.
Among the four that have so far declared interest included a renowned Professor of Electrical Engineering and lecturer of the Anambra State University, Professor Chimaihe Barnabas Mbachu, Engr. Anthony Nnoli, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering of the Enugu State University ( ESUT), Engr. Chidi Amarube, who is also a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from IMT and University of Port Harcourt in River State and a Lagos based International business man, Ogbuehi Raph Njirika.
It was also confirmed that two other contestants have declared interest for the position namely- the immediate Chairman and youth Chairman of Ibughubu community,  Hon. Ifeanyi Emegwa and Hon Izuchukwu Anyalebechi respectively.
They were said to have indicated interest and have not made their profile public as they continue to make consultations as the contestants were said to have  intensified efforts to reach out to many influential indigenes both at home and in diaspora for support.
It was gathered that the pendulum seems to be tilting towards Professor Mbachu for his personality, wealth of experience and educational background. He was said to have accepted to vie for the position and saw it as an opportunity to serve and contribute to the development of the town as way of giving back to the town.
However, it will not be an easy ride for Professor Mbachu because he has another strong contender, Engr. Anthony Nnoli, who is said to be very popular and equally pushing to emerge as a sole candidate.
Chief Nnoli believes he will clinch the ticket based on the fact that he was former Chairman of Ibughubu community and had held many positions in the past and said that his achievements speak for him.
Another surprise among the contestants is the youngest, Engr. Chidi Amarube, who is based in Lagos. He was said to be pushing seriously get the ticket and mobilizing his ward in Umuagu and reaching out to individuals for support.
Engr. Amarube may spring surprises if he eventually clinches the ticket. He was said to be basking on the clarion call by the youths of the town that power should shift to the younger generation, where he falls into because of his age.
However, the youths clamouring for power shift may not yield much results because of the voting pattern during the election because it is a representative Assembly.
Amarube also has strong contenders in Emegwa and Izuchukwu because they have held positions in Ibughubu community unlike Amarube, who has no record of holding any position in his community except in Lagos State.
Another strong contestant is Ogbuehi Raph Njirika. He was said to be popular in other blocks that make up Umuchu town especially Amanasaa community and he was said to be pushing seriously to clinch the position.
Ogbuehi Njirika may be pushing for the ticket based on his experience and achievements as former Chairman of Ibughubu community. But he has strong opposition among his community though he is not relenting in making contacts for support.
There has been reactions over the contestants among the indigenes in different platforms on who will eventually emerge as the President General among the contestants.
A United Nation Ambassador for Peace, Amb. Uchenna Ezeibekwe, stated that the position of PG Umuchu town is not meant for learners making experiments and insisted that any person vying for the position must be sound in every ramifications including education, mental stability and dignity in order to move Umuchu town to the next level on assumption of office.
Though the contestants have indicated interest to vie for the position, what is certain is that it is only one person that will emerge as the President General, which will be determined during the election through Representative Assembly.
