Policeman Escapes Death After Being Stoned By Angry Mob As Thief

A Police Inspector, Oguntoye Ogundipe, attached to Isheri Oshun Division of the Lagos State Command, has escaped death after he was attacked and stoned by an angry mob allegedly calling him a thief while performing his lawful duty on a highway.

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 14th April, 2025 ,at Ijegun bus stop, Ijegun area of Lagos.

 

Inspector Ogundipe was said to have gone to perform his lawful duty as directed by the DPO of the station, CSP Martins Uzoma.

 

Two of the suspects behind the attack, Amodu Umar, 22 and Umar Alhaji, 30 have been arrested and charged for  the alleged conspiracy and assault on Ogundipe.

 

According to the Police, Inspector  Ogundipe went to the bus stop to perform his duty when the angry road users mobilized themselvea, attacked him and attempted to stone him to death.

 

However, he managed to escape but he sustained serious injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment due to the injuries he sustained during the attack.

 

What angered the attackers was not disclosed by the Police. The operatives eventually mobilized themselves, arrested the suspects and detained them at the station while others were said to be at large.

 

They were consequently charged before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment.

 

The charges read:

COUNT I:”That you, Amodu Umar,22 and Umar Alhaji and others now at large on the 14/04/2025 at about 22:35hrs at ljegun Bus stop, in the Lagos state magisterial district, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the criminal law of Lagos state Nigeria 2015″

COUNT II: “That you, Amodu Umar and Umar Alhaji and others now at large on the same date, place and time at the aforementioned magisterial district, did conduct yourselves in a way and manner likely to cause breach of the peace by beating up one Oguntoye Ogundipe while on his official duty, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 168 (d) criminal law of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.”

 

COUNT III:”That you, Amodu Umar,22 and Umar Alhaji and others now at large on the same date, plac and time at the aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully assault Inspector Oguntoye Ogundipe with stones, which caused him bodily injury on his head, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 174 of the criminal law of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.”

 

However, they pleaded not guilty.

 

The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since they pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that they actually committed the alleged offence.

 

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.A. 4Popoola granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

 

The matter was adjourned till 19th May, 2025, for mention while the defendants were remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when they will perfect their bail conditions.
