Commissioner Tonycollins Nwabunwanne Dabbles Into Messy Nze Na Ozo Umuchu Battle

KINGSLEY EBERE

The supremacy battle between the Indigenous Council Nze na Ozo led by Chief Bonaventure Mokwe (Obiridike) and Supreme Council of Nze na Ozo led by Ozo Chinedu Ezeoha a.k.a Ijerenze in Umuchu town, Aguata Local Government area of Anambra State, has taken another dimension.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the battle has now moved from Umuchu town to the Anambra State Government in Awka following a contradicting letter by the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, against the culture and tradition of Umuchu town over the Nze na Ozo title.
While the traditional ruler of the town, Eze Godson Ezechukwu, in line with the culture and tradition of Umuchu town, declared that Nze na Ozo is a kindred affair, which the Indigenous Nze na Ozo adhered to while Supreme Council believe that they will have control the affairs of Nze na Ozo in Umuchu and insisted that any Nze na Ozo group will not function in the town.
Thus, the Commissioner, Hon. TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, wrote a controversial letter to the President General of the town, Ozo Charles Ezenwabasili, to recognize the Supreme Council of Nze na Ozo against the culture and tradition of Umuchu town.
Following the recent letter which has been rejected outrightly, a member of Indigenous Nze na Ozo, Ichie Paul Okpara (Ozo Akuruoulo Umuchu) has written a petition against Hon. TonyCollins Nwabunwanne and Ijerenze for their alleged conduct using the name of Governor Soludo to perpetrate the act in Umuchu town in total disregard to the culture and tradition.
The letter dated 1st July, 2025, addressed to the Governor stated:
HIs Excellency
Sir,
“RE: SERIAL UNBECOMING CONDUCT/CORRUPT PRACTICES OF HON. TONY COLINS NWABUNWANNE, THE COMMISSIONER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND CHIEFTANCY AFFAIRS, WHICH HE HABITUALLY CLAIMS TO BE YOUR DIRECTIVE. ARE HIS CORRUPT PRACTICES INLINE WITH THE SOLUTION AGENDA?
“The above Commissioner in question has practically turned Umuchu town into his regular bank account funders. It has become his corruption play ground. Take the case of Umuchu 2024 Chieftancy coronation incident, where he showcased his notorious corruption personified culture like his Ifitedunu town mess, he fostered and personally listed 21 individuals to be coronated as Chiefs in a singular Ofala. It was record breaking. It was so heated up in the town that all the 21 individuals were coronated along the streets of Umuchu and the regular bar.”
His partner in the epic corruption is one Mr. Chinedu Ezeoha, who is essentially a “fixer”. In an attempt to portray due process, in a letter dated the 19th day of February, 2025, referenced as MLGCCA/CM/56/T/208, which is attached and marked (A), Hon. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne warned against the coronation of Chiefs, a directive he claimed to have come from your office.
He caught the town unawares when he made a corruption-induced U-turn and wrote a second letter dated the 27th day of February, 2025, which was 7 days after the first letter, with reference number MLGC/076/T/277, not only allowing the Chieftancy coronation, but also, he personally listed out the 21 individuals that will be coronated as Chiefs and every single one of them was said to have paid the sum of 2 million Naira each to him. All this was facilitated by his “fixer” Chinedu Ezeoha. The letter in question is attatched and marked “B”.
The conflicing two letters came to a boiling point environment in the town and hence the embarrasing along the road chieftancy corronation. Both benefiaries of the epic corruption, Hon. Tonycollins and Mr. Chinedu Ezeoha, smiled to their respective banks.
The huge problem in our town presently is yet another letter from Hon. Tonycollins Nwabunwanner, which he again claimed to be your directive. In the very letter, contrary to Umuchu culture and tradition and without any consultation with our traditional ruler, he imposed what he called Supreme Council Ozo scheme on us. Under the scheme, every intending Nze na Ozo individual must spend between 8 million and 10 million Naira, which likely includes a “return for Hon. Tonycolins Nwabunwanne” and must belong to his Supreme Council Ozo, which was registered in 2024. His “fixer” Chinedu Ezeoha is the head of extortion outfit. The letter in question is dated 25th day of June, 2025, with reference number MLGCCA/C,/076/T.2/28. It is hereby attached and marked (C).
The mind blowing aspect of it all is that, in a letter written by the traditional ruler of Umuchu, Igwe Godson Ezechukwu, OON, dated the 18th day of June 2025, he stated out the culture and tradition of our town as it concerns Nze na Ozo. It was completely ignored by Hon. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne. Attached and mark (D) is the letter under reference. “Barrister Nobis Elendu (Ozonma) an Umuchu native could not have said it any better when he comprehensively summerized all there is to know about Umuchu Nze na Ozo. See attachment marked (E).”
I am very much aware that His Excellency is not aware of all these fraudulent scheme of Hon. Tunycollins Nwabunwanne and hence this my petition. He is a native of Anam, his Supreme Council Ozo scheme will work there perfectly and not in Umuchu. We will continue to practice our culture and tradition as was laid out by our traditional ruler.
Whereby I pray you as follows:
A. Re-visiting of his appointment as a Commissioner in the light of the following.
(i) He is notorious on such activity in all the towns in Anambra State, the Ifitedunu town incident is a reminder.
(ii) He contributes nothing to the political portfolio of the Soludo administration other than a gallery of corruption.
B. “Instructing Hon. TonyCollins Nwabunwanne to contact the palace of our traditional ruler, Igwe Godson Ezechukwu OON, for a guided damage control of his unbecoming letter that is all but certain to be ignored.
I remain your supporter like Umuchu in general for all that our town has derived from your administration and your performance in general.
I will greatly appreciate it if this my petition is given an attention.
Yours faithfully,
Cc;
1. Hon. Attorney general, Anambra State, Government House Awka.
2. Department of State Security (State Director) Awka Anambra State.
3. The Commissioner of Police Anambra State.
