Lady, 39, Arraigned For Swindling Man Of N6.5m Under False Pretence

A 39-year old lady, Adenola Mopelola Funmilayo, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly swindling a man, Asibude Increace, to the tune of N6.5m under false pretence.
 
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 27th January, 2025, at No 14, Omonije Street, Ishefun, Ayobo, Lagos.
According to the Police, the suspect told the complainant that she had contacts to procure travel documents and visa to Dubai with the promise to secure a job as well. The victim believed her and gave her the money.
However, after she collected the money,  she bolted away and disconnected every communication she had with the complainant and did not procure the visa nor refund the money.
The matter was reported to the Police at Area P Command Headquarters. The operatives moved into action, eventually arrested and detained him at the Command for interrogation over her alleged conduct.
After thorough interrogation, the suspect was found culpable and charged before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged offence which attracts several years of imprisonment.
The charges read:
COUNT I: “That you, Adenola Mopelola Funmilayo ‘F’, and two others at large, on the 27th January, 2025 at No 14, Omonije Street, Ishefun, Ayobo Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire together to commit felony to wit obtaining under false pretense and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT II:”That you, Adenola Mopelola Funmilayo ‘F’, and two others at large, on the same date, and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did fraudulently obtain the sum of Six Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N6,500.000.00K) from one Asibude Increace ‘M’, under false pretense to procure a Dubai family visa for him, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 314 (1) of the criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”
COUNT III:”That you, Adenola Mopelola Funmilayo ‘F’, and two others at large, on the same date, and place in the aforesaid magisterial district, did fraudulently convert to your personal use the sum of Six Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N6,500.000.00K) property of one Asibude Increase ‘M’ and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 280(b) and punishable under Section 287 of the criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”
However, she pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that she actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.A. Popoola, granted her bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when she will perfect her bail conditions.
