Ooni Visits Ogunsua, Declares End To Ife–Modakeke Crisis

Thousands of residents on Friday thronged the streets of Modakeke, Osun State, as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, paid a royal visit to the Ogunsua of Modakeke, His Royal Highness, Oba Joseph Olubiyi Toriola, Ajibise Ogo I, at his palace.
The visit, marked by cultural displays and chants of solidarity, signified a renewed bond between the two ancient communities and a public reaffirmation of lasting peace.
Speaking during the visit, the Ooni declared that the era of hostilities between the people of Ile-Ife and Modakeke had ended permanently, warning those who attempt to sow discord to desist.
“No war can ever happen again between Ife and Modakeke, not under my reign as the Arole Oduduwa. Those who cause trouble are thieves, not our people,” the monarch declared to loud cheers from the crowd.
Ooni Ogunwusi cautioned against individuals who exploit the harvest season to stir tension under the guise of the long-resolved rivalry, insisting that such acts belong to the past.
He offered prayers for lasting peace, unity, and progress between the two communities and urged the youth to embrace hard work and shun violence.
Receiving the Ooni, the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Toriola, commended the monarch for his consistent efforts at sustaining peace across Yorubaland, describing him as “the glory of the Yoruba race whose heart is constantly set on harmony.”
He, however, called for strengthened security across the region and passionately advocated for the emergence of an Ife-born governor in the next political dispensation.
“We see what you are doing across Yorubaland, in the North, East and even abroad. You have allowed peace to reign, and for that, we are grateful,” the Ogunsua said.
“However, we must strengthen local security. Also, Kabiyesi, the time has come for an Ife-born governor. Let us work together to achieve this.”
Earlier, the President of the Modakeke Progressive Union (MPU), Professor Olawunmi, described the occasion as historic, noting that both monarchs have demonstrated uncommon leadership and unity. He appealed for continued dialogue to resolve lingering issues between the communities.
In his response, Ooni Ogunwusi expressed delight over the progress recorded in Modakeke under Oba Toriola’s reign, including the completion of the new palace, and pledged continued royal support. He also confirmed his attendance at the forthcoming Akoraye Day celebration.
“As requested, I will not be far away from Modakeke. This is my home. Let us forget old rifts,” he said.
Dignitaries at the event included HRH Oba Eludoja Elugbemi (Obalaaye of Iraye Kingdom), the Lowa Ate of Ile-Ife, Arode of Ile-Ife, Oosa of Modakeke, Asipa Balogun of Modakeke, Balogun Iyalode of Modakeke, Professor Olawunmi, and other traditional and community leaders.
