A 45-year old security guard, Oluwadare Opanuga, has landed in trouble in Lagos State for failing to catch thieves who stole goods worth N7m belonging to Victor Emeka during an operation.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the security man, Oluwadare Opanuga, has been arrested and charged for negligence of duty under the Criminal Law of the State.
The incident happened at Ikola Road, Meiran area of Lagos, where the suspect was employed as a security guard.
The matter was reported to the Police at Meiran Division. The suspect was arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over the theft where he was supposed to guard.
While being interrogated, the suspect told the Police that he was not around when the robbers invaded the area and stole the items despite the fact that he was the security guard.
The Police found him culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence which attracts several years of imprisonment.
The charge read:
“That you, Oluwadare Opanuga ‘M’ negligently left your duty post as a security guard working at Ikola Road and cost harm to one Victor Emeka by allowing thief or thieves to cart away his goods valued at N7,000,000 (Seven Million Naira only) and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 252 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”
However, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Josephine Ihkayere, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted him bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
