British Oasis Academy Abuja Appoints William Stephen Pope As New Principal

Pope officially assumed the role ahead of the 2026/27 academic session and will lead the school’s next phase of growth, which includes academic restructuring, expansion of facilities, and the launch of nursery and primary programmes in September.

A South African national with Dutch, Irish and Scottish heritage, Pope brings more than 45 years of experience in education. His career spans classroom teaching, curriculum design, school administration, and leadership roles in both South Africa and Nigeria.

Over the years, he has worked in student management, teacher training, staff welfare, school marketing, research, and academic planning. Colleagues describe him as a hands-on administrator with a strong focus on discipline, academic standards, and student welfare.

In Nigeria, Pope has held senior leadership positions in some of the country’s top schools. His previous roles include positions at Grange School in Lagos, Nobelhouse in Abeokuta, and KIA Lakeside Academy in Abuja. Across these schools, he was involved in curriculum development, staff development, and repositioning schools for better academic and extracurricular outcomes.

Speaking on his new appointment, Pope said he is committed to building on the foundation already laid at British Oasis Academy.

Established 12 years ago in Abuja, British Oasis Academy runs both boarding and day-school programmes. The school follows a British-style curriculum and is known for its focus on holistic education.

The campus includes modern classrooms, science laboratories, hostels, a medical centre, and facilities for sports and recreation. Over the last decade, the academy has built a reputation for preparing students for WAEC, NECO, IGCSE, and other international examinations.

With the new leadership, the school says it plans to strengthen its academic programmes while expanding access to younger learners.

Pope is expected to lead several key initiatives in the coming months. Top priorities include:

1.  Academic Excellence: Reviewing curriculum delivery and introducing teacher training to improve learning outcomes.

2.  Discipline and Character: Reinforcing the school’s values of responsibility, respect, and civic duty.

3.  Sports and Leadership: Expanding inter-house sports, clubs, and leadership training to develop well-rounded students.

4.  Early Years Expansion: Overseeing the rollout of the academy’s nursery and primary sections, set to begin in September. The new sections will offer early-years education based on the British Early Years Foundation Stage framework.

The academy has also opened admissions for the 2026/27 academic session for both day and boarding students. Interested parents can apply through the school’s admissions office in Abuja.

School management said the appointment of Pope aligns with its long-term goal of becoming one of Nigeria’s leading British-style schools.
