Governor Willie Obiano has said that his government has started disbursing funds for the rehabilitation of water schemes across the state.

Obiano disclosed this when he paid unscheduled visits to inspect various water schemes in Awka South LGA of Anambra State, including two water  schemes respectively at Nibo and Amawbia communities.

The Amawbia water scheme which was done by the previous administration but was abandoned since 2013, was meant to serve seven (7) communities.

During the visit, it was observed that the pumping machines and boreholes have been reactivated, with 3 communities, Amawbia, Nawfia and some part of Awka expected to have water.

While addressing the press after the inspection exercises, the Governor revealed that the essence of his visit was to see what had been done with the funds he released so far.

He expressed satisfaction with what he saw on ground, adding that when completed it is expected that the 7 communities will have constant water supply. Obiano assured that the government was committed to revamping all the existing water schemes across the state to provide access to portable water to all Ndi Anambra.

The Commissioner for Power and Domestic Water Development, Mr. Obi Nwankwo explained that the projects did not work before because no structure was put in place to ensure their sustainability. He said what the present administration wants to do differently is to hand over the projects to committees set up by the communities to oversee and to maintain.

According to him, under this arrangement the projects will provide water free of charge to the communities and sell to tanker operators to raise money for its maintenance.
