A mentally unstable man, identified as Chigozie Orusa, was reportedly burnt to death after he allegedly killed 9 people in Nempi, Oru West Local Government area of Imo State.

According to an eye witness, Chigozie, was a trader in Onitsha until he became mentally unstable suddenly. His friends in Onitsha took him down to his family compound in Nempi, where he has been under the care of his family.

As days went by, Chigozie’s mental situation worsened but his family members were said to have been reluctant to take him to a psychiatric hospital.

In the early hours of 8th December, 2019, Chigozie allegedly macheted 9 people to death. Out of the 9 people he reportedly killed, 7 were his family members; his grandfather, the 3rd wife of his grandfather and five of his cousin’s children while the other two victims were said to be neighbours.

Reacting to the killings, angry youths in the community quickly pounced on Chigozie and set him ablaze.

Rumours had it that Chigozie’s quest to become rich suddenly made him to join an occult group, which reportedly resulted to his madness. Others said it was the result of intake of hard drugs that led to his mental illness.
