The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has advised residents to take precautionary measures to prevent disasters in view of the prevailing harmattan season which aids the spread of fire.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke through the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter -Governmental Relations, Dr. Wale Ahmed, urged the people to be cautious because the current low humidity could spread fire, noting that numerous fire outbreaks have been recorded in parts of Nigeria and the rest of the world.

The Governor advised Lagosians, including traders as well as shop owners, to always switch off all electrical appliances and unplug them while leaving their apartments, saying “if there is no spark, there won’t be spread of fire”.

While advising residents to keep gas cylinders in an open space away from their kitchens to prevent fire disasters even in the case of a leakage, the Governor called on the people to invest in basic firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers to deal with fire incidents.

He also cautioned against the use of fireworks, maintaining that an outbreak of fire could occur if the items come in contact with combustible materials.

Governor Sanwo -Olu affirmed that the State government is prepared to respond to emergency situations at all times, advising however that it was better and more cost effective to take precautionary measures to prevent disasters, including fire outbreaks.
