ADMCA’s Anti-Corruption Day To Hold On 4th September

Posted on August 5, 2020

The Association of Digital Media Core Advocates, ADMCA, is set to host the Anambra Independent Media Anti-Corruption Summit to step up National action in order to expose, punish and drive out corruption in all walks of life. It will seek to interrogate the media’s role in curbing corruption and specifies the significance of media freedom in this process.

The event, which expected to take place on Friday 4th September, 2020, at Marble Arch Hotel, Off Obi Okoli Avenue, Unizik Temp Site, Awka, Anambra State, will commence by 3.00pm with theme: “The Role of Media in Tackling Corruption”.

Throwing more light on the event, Dr. Harris Chuma-Odili (AGG) National President – Association of Digital Media Core Advocates, ADMCA, Convener, National Loyalty Movement, said, “In modern societies, free media can be part of external factors in fighting corruption. They can be an institution of checks and balances. As the fourth estate, the media monitor compliance with democratic laws, values, and norms. However, in contrast to the three institutional powers (legislative, executive, and judicial bodies), mass media have no formal means to sanction misconduct by corrupt public officials; therefore,  they exert their public control indirectly (Stapenhurst, 2000)’.
“As an institution of checks and balances, free media play vital roles in curbing corruption. In addition, the global rise of internet access and e-government increases the likelihood for corrupt public officials to be exposed.”
“Corruption is a pervasive global problem with detrimental effects on economic performance, political stability, and societal integration (Hellman, Jones,  Kaufman &  Schankerman, 1999; Mauro,1995; Nye, 1967).”
“The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, 2008) defines corruption as the “misuse of entrusted power for private gains”. Current examples such as the exposure of Corruption in connection with NDDC emphasises the hope that free media, especially the internet, may play a vital role in the process of curbing corruption. Given the growing number of internet users, mobile internet devices, and public online services, the potential of the internet to fight corruption cannot be ignored.”The Association of Digital Media Core Advocates, ADMCA, will through the summit seek to galvanise a national response to tackle corruption as well as agreeing a package of actions to tackle corruption across the board. It will deal with issues including corporate secrecy, government transparency, the use of social media to curb corruption, etc.
It will be the first summit of its kind, bringing together renowned Social Media Influencers, Journalists, bloggers, NGOs and Civil Society to agree on a package of practical steps to:A.  Expose corruption so there is nowhere to hideB.  Expose the perpetrators and support those affected by corruptionC.  Drive out the culture of corruption wherever it exists.

According to Dr. Harris Chuma-Odili, it promises to be educating and engaging as the Anti-graft agencies and other critical stakeholders have confirmed their their attendance.
