The Apex Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ime Obi, has created confusion in Lagos by purportedly nullifying the election organized by Chief Solomon Aguene, where Chief Leonard Okafor (Oba Ojoto) emerged as president.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the decision was said to have been made during a meeting held in Enugu State, presided over by the President Worldwide, Senator John Mbata.

The meeting, attended by prominent Igbo leaders from across Nigeria and the diaspora, decided that the National body will conduct Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos election in July, effectively nullifying Aguene’s election.

This move has sparked uncertainty and tension within the organization.

Chief Evarestus Ozonweke (Onowu), National Coordinator of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Southwest, confirmed the decision, stating that the Apex body has an existing constitution guiding elections in chapters worldwide.

According to Ozonweke, the constitution stipulates that the National body, through its committee, will organize elections, including in Lagos.

The nullification of the election conducted by Chief Aguene raises questions about the legitimacy of Chief Leonard Okafor’s presidency. It is unclear how this development will affect Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s operations in Lagos State and beyond.

The decision by the Apex Ime Obi meeting suggests that the organization is taking steps to assert its authority and ensure adherence to its constitution. This move may help resolve internal conflicts and promote stability within the organization.

Ozonweke emphasized that the National body’s decision is final and binding, urging all stakeholders to respect the outcome. He stressed that the organization is committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election in June 2026.

The situation highlights the complexities and challenges facing Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent socio-cultural organization representing Igbo interests. The organization’s ability to navigate these challenges will be crucial in maintaining its relevance and effectiveness.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the National body implements its decision and ensures a smooth transition. The outcome will have significant implications for the future of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and its role in promoting Igbo unity and interests.

In the meantime, the nullification of Aguene’s election serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to organizational constitutions and respecting institutional processes. This development may prompt other organizations to review their own governance structures and ensure compliance with their rules and regulations.

The Apex Ime Obi’s decision has created a new chapter in the history of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, with the organization poised to move forward under new leadership and guidance.

Efforts to reach the President General, Senator John Mbata, were not successful as at the time of filing this report.
