Awgbu Footballers Honour Chioma Mbionwu

Players in the annual Awgbu December Football League have honoured Miss Chioma Mbionwu, a student of Medical Rehabilitation, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Okofia Campus, Nnewi, Anambra State, who was shot dead by unknown gunmen on 3rd October, 2021, during an attack at Nnewi

A minute silence was observed for her during the opening match of the annual Awgbu December League Football competition, which held on St. Mary Field, Awgbu on the 25th December 2021 in a match between Ofumba Ji FC and Equity FC.

Similarly, on the 28th December, 2021, in another match held at St. Micheal’s field, Awgbu, between Equity FC and Awgbu United, the players of Equity FC were spotted putting on a Jersey with the picture of Chioma Mbionwu imprinted on it to immortalise her.

Speaking to the press shortly after the match, Obi Nwafor, who is the owner of Equity FC stated that,

“When Chioma was alive she was passionate about football and was present to watch many of the matches played during the Awgbu December Football League. The whole community is saddened by her death. Her love for football was enormous and she played it with much passion alongside dream of going professional one day . This is why we decided to honour her”.

Awgbu is a town in Orumba North LGA of Anambra State. The late Chioma Mbionwu was an indigene of Awgbu town. May the soul of Chioma Mbionwu continue to rest in peace.
