Ayade Urged To Support Census Exercise

Posted on February 22, 2023

The Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade, has been urged to support the census exercise tentatively scheduled for March 29 to April 2 this year.

The call was made on Tuesday in Calabar by a Federal Commissioner in charge of Cross River in the National Population Commission, Navy Captain Charles Ogwa (retd).

Speaking at a training workshop on reporting population census which several journalists participated, Ogwa lamented that several attempts and even letters had been written to the Governor to take ownership of the exercise but to no avail.
He said data generated from the census is more useful to the government for planning purposes than to an individual, hence the need for the governor to key into the exercise because the government would be the first to engage in litigation if the outcome is not favourable to the state.
He said the exercise which over one million people are being trained to conduct, will be technology driven, adding that “technology will remove human interference in the exercise. Nobody can manipulate the data.”
He expressed optimism that the exercise would be successful.
One of the paper presenters, Aya Ebirigor said: “The 2023 Population and Housing Census will be Nigeria’s first digital census. Innovative digital tools have been already used in the preparatory activities for the census.”
The state director of NPC, Billy Bassey Eteng said 98% of the country has been demarcated for the exercise, whose preparation started in 2015.
Several papers on pre-census activities and the history of census in Nigeria were presented.
