AYCF To Buhari: Don’t Let Politics Kill Judiciary

Posted on February 4, 2019

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has warned President Muhammadu Buhari not to let politics “kill Nigeria’s justice system”.

A statement signed by the AYCF National President, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, took a swipe at “the official advisers of the President who are supposed to have cautioned him against the removal of Justice Onnoghen as only the National Judicial Council has the powers of recommendation and action against any erring judicial officer”.

The AYCF expressed concern over “the kind of haste in handling the controversial suspension” adding that “there are clear Constitutional processes involved in the sack of a justice because we are not a Banana Republic”.

The group called on human rights groups in the country to maintain the tempo of crying out on support of the Rule of Law and for the defence of the judicial institution as an important pillar of democracy.

The group described as totally “unacceptable, the attempt to forcefully drag the judiciary into partisan issues, at the risk of ridiculing our hard-earned democracy”.

The statement concluded that there danger signals in the latest attempt by the executive arm to “emasculate the judiciary and people like Justice Onnoghen” adding that ” even the reaction of the international community, notably the US, UK, EU, AU and many others is strong indication that strangulation of the judiciary is a misnomer”.
