Ben Akwuegbu Makes Heartfelt Appeal For Support Of Former Nigerian Football Stars

Posted on December 17, 2024
Former Nigerian international soccer star, Benedict Akwuegbu , famously known as the “Austrian Bomber,” has made a heartfelt appeal to the Nigeria Football Federation and the public at large to show sympathy and support for the country’s retired football heroes.
Speaking from his base in London, Akwuegbu emphasized the urgent need to recognize and assist those who dedicated their lives to serving Nigeria on the football field.
In a poignant telephonic conversation with the professional wordsmith and humanitarian, Chief Mike Cerutti Osagie, from his London base last night, Akwuegbu shared the distressing situation of former winger, Tijani Babangida, whom he had introduced to Osagie during a visit in Jos last Christmas.
Akwuegbu recounted the tragic circumstances surrounding Babangida’s life, detailing how he suffered a horrific accident that claimed the lives of his brother and son, and left his wife with a severe injury, losing an eye in the process. Despite his achievements and contributions to Nigerian football, Babangida found himself in dire straits, spending nearly all of his life savings on medical bills and recovery. Akwuegbu lamented that while Babangida received support from his former clubs in Holland and foreign friends, the assistance from Nigeria was notably absent… Or to put it succinctly not encouraging.
Akwuegbu’s call to action is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by retired athletes, who once brought pride to the nation. He expressed deep regret over the lack of support for those who have given so much to their country, stating, “People who served Nigeria must be taken care of, not used and dumped”.
His plea is not only a reflection of compassion but a call for systemic change within the Nigerian football community to ensure that former players are not forgotten or left to struggle alone in their time of need.
Akwuegbu’s words resonate with many, urging a collective responsibility to uplift and support the legends who paved the way for future generations of Nigerian footballers.
