Boy Lands In Prison For Stealing N8,000 Biscuits

A teenage boy, Simon Francis, has been remanded in custody in Kaduna State over his inability to meet N100,000 bail conditions for stealing N8,000 worth of biscuits.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the defendant was charged before the Kaduna Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing two cartons of biscuits worth the said amount after he was arrested by the Police.
The incident happened at a shopping mall located in Sabon Tasha area of the State.
The prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the Court that the defendant committed the offence by stealing two cartons of biscuits worth N8000.
He stated that the defendant stole the items and handed them over to his friend not knowing a CCTV camera had recorded them.
He said, “On getting outside, the defendant was approached by a security guard and arrested while his friend ran away leaving their bags with the stolen biscuits recovered”.
He was handed over to the Police in the area for prosecution as the management insisted on getting justice on the matter.
The alleged offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The Presiding Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦100,000 with one surety, who must be employed and have proven of means of livelihood.
The matter was adjourned till 26th June, 2024, for hearing while the defendant was remanded in correctional center pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
