Buruj Football Club & Sports Academy: Building Nigeria’s Next Generation Through Football And Education

The Chief Executive Officer of Buruj Football Club and Buruj Sports Academy, Dr. Salaudeen Waheed Buruj, has reiterated his commitment to developing young Nigerian footballers through a model that balances professional football training with formal education.

Speaking from the United Kingdom, Dr. Buruj said the academy’s core philosophy is to create a sustainable pathway where talent development does not come at the expense of academics.

“My philosophy is simple: we must give young players a platform where they can pursue their academic ambitions while developing their football careers. Education and football should work together, not clash,” he said.

According to him, the goal is to build an environment where players can study, train, and prepare for life beyond football, ensuring that one pursuit does not undermine the other.

Through Buruj Football Club and Buruj Sports Academy, players are given opportunities to experience football beyond Nigeria through international camps, trials, tournaments, and development programmes.

The objective, Dr. Buruj explained, is to expose them to different football cultures, modern training methods, quality facilities, professional environments, and broader sporting opportunities.

The programme also prioritizes the welfare and long-term future of the players.

“The vision is not simply to produce footballers, but to help develop disciplined young people who can build meaningful careers both on and off the pitch,” he noted.

Dr. Buruj believes that while hiring foreign coaches to Nigeria can be expensive and challenging, a more sustainable approach is to identify talented players early, groom them from a young age, and gradually expose them to international football environments.

The long-term ambition is to prepare players for higher levels of the game, including opportunities to represent Nigeria at U15, U17, and U20 levels, while ensuring they have the education and life skills necessary for their future.

The academy maintains that Nigerian football is rich in talent, but what young players need is structured development, quality coaching, education, international exposure, and the right opportunities at the right age.

“From Nigeria to the United Kingdom and beyond, our philosophy is focused on building a pathway that gives young players the chance to dream, learn, develop, compete and ultimately create a better future for themselves,” Dr. Buruj said.
