Cricket: Team Anambra Are Champions Of Chuma Anosike Cup

Team Anambra defeated Team Enugu to emerged the champions of the 11th edition of Chuma Anosike South East Cricket Tournament by 70 runs at the Umuahia Township stadium Cricket Pitch.

Anambra batted first and scored 186 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. Eghosa Aghedo scored 60 runs off 33 balls, Damian Okeke scored 31 runs off 32 balls, Mgbojigwe Chukwudi scored 14 runs off 10 balls while Nzube Nwokike had 14 runs off 13 balls.

Obinna Chisom of Team Enugu took 4 wickets in 4 overs and conceded 27 runs, Prince Ogbue took 1 wicket in 4 overs and conceded 29 runs, Henry Okafor, Princewill Nzubechi, Omeifeukwu Walter all had 1 wicket without a maiden.

In the second innings, Enugu State’s 116 runs all out in 18..2 overs was not enough to cancel Team Anambra’s 186 runs deficit.

Orji Temple double digit of 21 runs off 20 balls,seems to give hope but Agu Somto 15 runs off 23 balls and Pascal Okoye’s 10 runs off 33 balls could not increase Enugu’s runs while Anambra took the advantage through the bowlings.

Okeke Bonaventure took 2 wickets in 3 overs and conceded 17 runs , Nzububem David took 2 wickets in 4 overs, conceded 14 runs, Kodjo Timinadi had 2 wickets in 2 overs and conceded 14 runs while Eghosa Aghedo, Udekwue Chinemelie and Damien Chijiike all took 1 wicket each to end the game.

After the explosive encounter, the Most Valuable Cricketer of the series, Udekwue Chinemelie said winning their opponent was a moral booster and he is willing to improve on that.

Udekwue who was shortlisted for the senior national team camp in Lagos hinted that participating in this year’s South -East Cricket Tournament would increase the temple of his game in the national team.

“My first match in this tournament was in 2017, I was small then, I was in Junior Secondary School 3, but today I have improved I have stepped up my game and winning the Most Valuable Cricketer of the series is something I have been looking forward to.

“This tournament will boost my moral when the senior national team camp commences in Lagos. I will be finishing my secondary school education this year and in 5 years to come I hope to play with players like Virat Kollie, Steve Smith and Co and I also want to qualify Nigeria to the highest stage in cricket” Said Odekwue.

In women’s category, Team Ebonyi Triumphed Team Anambra by 49 runs to crown the champions.

The dignitaries who graced the occasion include the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Mr Omoruyi Akpata, Barrister Chuma Anosike sponsor, the five States chairmen of the South -East Cricket Association (SECA) and the ex internationals.
