A Police Corporal, Obagi Njok, has been dismissed and will have to face prosecution for allegedly shooting and killing a businessman, Emmanuel Okocha, on 20th April, 2024, over bribe in Aba town, Abia State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the embattled Corporal Njok was found culpable for the misuse of firearm, which led to the death of Abiriba town businessman, late Okocha.
This was disclosed by the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka. She stated that he faced Police disciplinary action, which has been concluded and the dismissed Corporal was found guilty of discreditable conduct with misuse of firearm and has therefore, been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.
She explained that the Police, while condemning acts of misconduct, unprofessionalism, and indiscipline among its officers, carried along the deceased family and relevant stakeholders during every step of the process.
Part of the statement read: “Investigation into the criminal aspects of his conduct has also been concluded and the matter has therefore been handed over to the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Abia state on 24/05/2024 for prosecution in Court”.
The late Okocha was shot and killed over his refusal to give the dismissed Police Corporal a bribe. He was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment after the gun shot. But the doctor at the hospital only certified him dead and the corpse was deposited at the mortuary for autopsy reports.
The officer, Corporal Njok, was arrested and detained at the Police Command for orderly trial. He was found guilty for the conduct and subsequently dismissed from the Nigerian Police.
He may likely be charged before the Court for murder under the Criminal law of the State, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.
