Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, a special unit of the Lagos State Police Command, Olatunji Disu has carved a niche for himself in crime fighting.

Since assuming the headship of the RRS, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital has dropped the toga of one of the most dangerous cities on the continent to the safest city.

Disu, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, is hailed by Lagos residents as the man who rescued their state from the grip of criminals. Today, Lagosians go about their businesses in the day without fear and sleep at night with their eyes closed.

The crack crime fighter has brought the Midas touch with which he raised the bar in policing to judo, a sport which he played and made his mark as a national champion.

Disu who became the chairman of the Lagos State Judo Association two years ago has changed the fortune of the sport in the state.

Secretary of the state judo association, Kunle Salau described Disu “as the best chairman the association has ever had.

“There has never been a dull moment in Lagos judo since he became chairman. Our association is too lucky to have him as chairman”. he said.

The secretary said Disu has never turned his back on the association in the moment of need.

According to him “Just five weeks ago, we approached him that we needed to have an open camp to prepare our judokas for the 20th National Sports Festival billed for Benin City in January.

“He gave his blessing and committed his resources. Today, the judo camp is buzzing with action as twenty five judokas under the supervision of a consortium of coaches prepare for the festival”.

Disu’s passion for judo is understandable.

As a judoka he made his mark. He was a gold medalist at the 1991 National Sports Festival in Bauchi, winner of several NUGA games  and Police games.

As a police officer, Disu who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Police Judo Association lives by the tenets of judo which are etiquette, modesty, self control, perseverance and indomitable spirit.

And it shows in how he discharges his assignments both as a crime fighter and as a sports administrator.
