CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
A 90-year old landlady has been hospitalized after she was allegedly beaten up by her 42-year old tenant over electricity bill in Lagos State, Nigeria.
The tenant, Christian Nwankwo, has landed in prison after he allegedly assaulted his landlady, Margret Enome.
An angry Nwankwo allegedly beat up Enome after she disconnected electricity to his apartment over accumulated bills he inherited from a former occupant of the apartment.
The incident happened at Sadiatu Kilani Street in Abaranje.
P.M. Express gathered that Nwankwo rented an apartment from Enome and after he moved in, the landlady cut off the cable supplying electricity to his apartment and claimed that the former tenant that packed out of the apartment was owing electricity bill.
It was gathered that the landlady informed him that before his apartment would be reconnected, he must pay the bill.
This angered Nwankwo who reportedly attacked her.
Alhough Nwankwo denied that he assaulted the nonagenarian, other tenants said he actually attacked and pushed the woman and she fell down.
The matter was reported to the police at Ikotun division who arrested Nwankwo and charged him to court with assault and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Kenneth Asibor, informed the court to note that the victim of the assault was an elderly woman above 90 years.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs J. O. E. Adeyemi granted Nwankwo bail with two sureties.
The court also directed that one of the sureties must own a land property within the court jurisdiction.
Nwankwo was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect the bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till 17 October, 2016.
