Former Presidential Contender, Uhuegbu Urges FG to Overhaul Nation’s Security

Justice C. Uhuegbu, National President of Good Governance and a Presidential candidate of the NAC in the last presidential election, has taken a swipe at the nation’s security apparatus and called for its total overhaul.

Uhuegbu- a lawyer, made this known in Owerri while briefing newsmen on the actions of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  on suspected ‘yahoo, yahoo boys’ in Imo State.

The human rights lawyer observed that operatives of the Anti-graft Agency (EFCC) are going contrary to established laws by clamping down on innocent citizens, mostly students, in the pretense of looking for cyber criminals.

He dismissed such an act as illegal, insisting that there are legally acceptable approach to such issues.

He recalled that instances abound where the operatives made such suspects to part with substantial amount of money so that they can be released.

Uhuegbu also the national convener of Youth Arise Initiative, said that there is no excuse for committing crime but called on the security agencies to deploy professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

He urged the government and commissioner of Police, Imo state, to swing into action and ensure that the security agents do not bring the nation to ridicule before the international community.

He condemned the recent ‘operation show your Identity’, which the military is set to embark in the South East zone.

He warned that such operation is undemocratic and should be jettisoned completely even as he wondered why the country is full of impunity, which he said is a vice that has negatively affected the country’s progression.

Barr. Uhuegbu said he recently opened his Owerri office to enable him to pursue human rights abuses flagrantly committed in the state.

He urged the government to concentrate on the welfare of the people rather than engaging on activities that impugn on the rights of the citizens they seek to protect.

The human rights lawyer faulted the national education budget as very poor and called on the government to look into it, stressing that manpower development is the highest investment on the people.

He also picked holes with the border closure by the Federal government, noting that it has not helped matter instead it put Nigerians in a more difficult situation.
