Gov Obaseki’s Headline On Broken Jinx Over Benin Port Project Misleading And Premature – Says Mayaki

Posted on July 15, 2023
Following Governor Obaseki’s claim of breaking jinx with the Benin Port Project, one of citizens, John Mayaki, has alleged that the news reportedly promoted by the Edo State Government was misleading.
John Mayaki said, “The recent news circulating in the media, promoted by the Edo State Government with the headline “Obaseki breaks 75-yr Benin Port jinx as Mota Engil Africa emerges developer,” has raised concerns about its accuracy and the portrayal of the situation. This press statement aims to provide a more balanced analysis and a fair assessment of the headline”.
“The use of the term “breaks a jinx” in the headline is not only misleading but also premature. Breaking a jinx typically implies overcoming a longstanding obstacle or curse and achieving tangible success. However, in this case, Governor Obaseki’s proposal for the construction of the Benin seaport and the selection of Mota Engil Africa as the developer do not automatically indicate that the jinx has been broken. The project has not yet commenced, and successful completion and delivery are the usual benchmarks for declaring a jinx broken.”
“Therefore, it is crucial to ensure accuracy in reporting and avoid creating false impressions. While the headline may intend to present a positive narrative and improve the government’s image, it can be argued that it fails to provide a complete picture of the situation. Construction work is yet to commence at the project site, and it is essential to manage public expectations and provide transparent updates.”
“As the tenure of the current administration is nearing its end, clear timelines and plans for the Benin seaport project become even more necessary. This will enable the public to have a realistic understanding of the project’s progress and the expected timeframe for its completion.”
“While headlines like this could benefit from a more balanced approach, it is vital to ensure accurate and transparent reporting, providing the public with a comprehensive view of the project’s status and any challenges or delays it may face. This approach will foster trust, manage expectations, and maintain credibility in the government’s handling of major infrastructure initiatives like the Benin seaport.”
“This situation also raises concerns about the government’s communication and project management. The headline, claiming that Governor Obaseki has broken a 75-year jinx, is not only misleading but also a form of false narration. It implies a significant achievement when, in reality, the project has not yet commenced, and there is no clear timeline for its completion.”
“This raises questions about the government’s ability to deliver on promises and effectively manage projects. It suggests a lack of transparency and accountability in communicating project progress to the public. Additionally, the fact that the project was promised to be initiated and completed in the first tenure of the administration, but no progress has been made, highlights potential inefficiencies and delays in governance.”
“In conclusion, this situation reflects poorly on the government’s image and raises concerns about their commitment to fulfilling promises and delivering tangible results. It emphasizes the importance of transparency, effective communication, and timely execution of projects to maintain public trust and confidence in the government’s abilities.”
