The Recording Academy, organisers of the Annual Grammy awards, have acknowledged the impact of Nigerian superstars; Wizkid, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi and others into making Afrobeats the next international sound sweeping pop music.

In a statement published on the Academy’s website, it noted that major stars like Kanye West and Rick Ross have collaborated with Afrobeats acts in the past but lauded Nigerian singer Wizkid for facilitating the global spread of Afrobeats and as a force to reckon with in the Afrobeats genre.

The Academy further confirmed Wizkid’s deal with Sony RCA, naming it the biggest by any African act, and his 2016 hit song “One Dance” with Drake as once most streamed song on Spotify.

Beyonce’s ‘The Lion King: The Gift’ album was also lauded for featuring acts such as Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, Shatta Wale, Mr. Eazi, Wizkid, and other African artists.

The Academy states that all eyes are now on Africa.
