The lawmaker representing Ikeja Constituency 2 and Deputy Majority Leader of Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (ARK), has called for a revisit of the proposal to confer a special status on Lagos State within the Nigeria federation.
The ranking lawmaker, Hon Kasunmu, made the call during the first plenary of the 10th Assembly held on Tuesday 11th July, 2023.
The main agenda of the day was the call for the establishment of the State Policing across the country to address the festering security challenges in the land. Mr. Speaker, Obasa and several lawmakers lent their voices in support of the motion.
In his first official contribution as the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Kasunmu commended Mr. Speaker for his foresight in making the call for State Policing as the number one focus of the House in the first Plenary of the 10th Assembly.
Speaking further, Hon. ARK said that that there is no better way of addressing the enormous security challenges facing our nation other than the immediate establishment of State Policing across the nation now. He cited the success  story of the Lagos State Neighborhood Security Corps (LNSC) as a good example of how effective Community policing can be if adopted.
Kasunmu expressed confidence that the idea of State Policing will work this time, stating that Mr. President himself has promised that State Policing will be his number one priority.
Rounding up his contribution, Hon. Kasunmu seized the opportunity to call for the conferment of a Special Status on Lagos State.
Recall that the argument for giving Lagos a Special Status had been raging for years. Senator Oluremi Tinubu in her capacity as the senator representing Lagos Central in the 8th Assembly moved the motion to this effect, but due to certain vested interests and fierce power play in the Senate then, the motion could not fly.
However on Tuesday July 11th 2023, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (ARK) renewed the call to give Lagos a Special Status. He also urged the House of Assembly keep pressing for this request alongside the call for state policing until it is granted.
The House later passed a resolution calling for establishment of State Police across the Nation.
