The families of those who buried their loved ones in a Lagos cemetery have expressed worries over the fate of the remains buried there following the falling of one big tree on top of their graves which reportedly destroyed many things.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that some graves at a popular Muslim Cemetery at Abari in Lagos Island were destroyed when a big tree fell on them on Sunday.

The management of the Cemetery has asked the families of the dead to come and identify the destroyed graves and repair them.

The big tree, which had existed inside the cemetery for many years, fell after it got uprooted as a result of heavy rainfall and destroyed about 20 graves in the process.

To avoid the situation where the vandals will have access to the destroyed graves and tempered with the corpses, the Lagos Island East Local Council Development Authority (LIELCDA), where the cemetery is located, has asked families of the dead to come and identify the graves and work on them.

The LIELCDA said in a statement issued by Olushoga Olushola, the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman of the Local Council, that the families are expected to get in touch with the Council Engineer for more information over the need to repair the graves.

According to the statement: “This is to inform all the families that buried their loved ones at Abari Muslim Cemetery, Lagos Island, that there has been a natural disaster, the biggest tree in the cemetery fell, which happened two days ago as a result of heavy rainfall”.

“The tree, which fell destroyed some graves. Families are directed to get in touch with our Council Engineer for more information on ways to repair the graves and do that on time so that some people will not capitalise on this to steal corpses from the graves.”
