Igbo Renaissance Forum Applauds Progress Toward State Policing In Nigeria

Posted on April 20, 2024
The Igbo Renaissance Forum, IRF, has commended the recent strides made in the discussion of State Policing in Nigeria led by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and supported by 16 governors.
The IRF believes that the introduction of State Police holds immense potential for transforming the security landscape in the country.
In a statement signed by Nze Ugo-Akpe Onwuka (Oyi) – International Coordinator, Igbo Renaissance Forum, the IRF said, “State Policing offers numerous advantages that can contribute to enhancing public safety and security”.
“One key benefit is the potential for improved coordination and communication between law enforcement agencies at the state and local levels. With a decentralized approach to policing, states can better address the unique security challenges faced in various regions, leading to more effective crime prevention and response strategies.”
“Furthermore, State Police can lead to faster response times in emergencies, as local law enforcement officers are likely to be more familiar with their communities and able to swiftly address incidents. This localized approach not only boosts the overall effectiveness of policing but also enhances trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the communities they serve.”
“Another crucial advantage of State Policing is the potential for greater accountability and transparency in law enforcement operations. By empowering states to manage their own police forces, there is an opportunity for increased oversight and scrutiny, ensuring that law enforcement agencies operate in accordance with established guidelines and standards. This accountability mechanism can help build public trust in the police and contribute to improved relations between law enforcement and the community.”
“The Igbo Renaissance Forum (IRF) views the proposed State Police structure as a positive step towards promoting security, enhancing community engagement, and fostering good governance at the local level.”
“We urge all stakeholders to carefully consider the potential benefits of State Policing and work towards its successful implementation for the betterment of our nation’s security landscape.”
